Map and directionsUnder 7 football in Basildon, ages 6 and 7
Under 7 is the first year of organised matches in England. Children aged 6 and 7 learn to play together as a small team, keep the ball close and enjoy their first real games.
- Ages
- 6–7 years
- Match format
- 5-a-side, the FA format for Under 7 and Under 8
What this group works on
- Dribbling with both feet
- Stopping the ball and first passes
- Playing together in a 5-a-side team
The FA recommends 5v5 for Under 7 and Under 8, and our sessions are built around it. Small teams mean every child is involved in every attack and every defence.
A typical session is a playful warm-up, a short skill block with cones and gates, and small-sided matches to finish. Coaches keep the instructions short and the ball time long.
Children learn the first habits of team football here: spreading out, calling for the ball and helping a team-mate.
